Megaman 8-bit deathmatch is a multiplayer online, first person-shooter that you can download for free. The game is made in a retro style, and it’s easy to pick up fast.

Overview and Background

The game actually uses the Doom engine, so those who are familiar with this engine will appreciate it the most. The game focuses on just whoever can get the most kills, which are also called ‘frags.’ This will definitely be familiar to anyone who is into the old deathmatch style for games. It’s definitely interesting to be able to focus on Megaman also being combined with the first-person style. Seeing the little blaster in blue in front of you is definitely a different experience.

Pros and Cons

  • Megaman Goodness-Those who are big fans of original Megaman will definitely appreciate the faithful reconstruction of the world here. It’s fully realized, and it makes the game interesting since the old school game was 2D and not a 3D shooter. So, the three dimensional nature of the game is definitely interesting.

You have access to every robot enemy from Megaman 1 through Megaman 6, and you can get all of the powerups and weapons you’d expect as you go through as well. So, not much is left out for fans of the original Nintendo series.

  • Quick to Pickup- The game is definitely also good in the sense that it’s easy to pick up all of the controls and just get playing. It’s definitely a downer when it takes forever to get anywhere with a game because you have to learn all of the controls.
  • Fast-paced- You move fast in the game, and that’s no lie. You have to get through everything quickly, and if you don’t have your twitch-based controls down, you will get fragged in a hurry. Those who prefer a mouse and keyboard approach definitely won’t be disappointed.
  • One-Dimensional- One down side to the game is that it’s a really simple game. It’s really just shoot people or get shot in turn. The board itself is fleshed out, but there’s not a lot of complexity in the game, and this could turn off some people. There are plenty of levels to play, but not a lot of variation within these levels.
  • Basic Graphics- The graphics are definitely not so good in this game, but then again, it is trying to recreate 8-bit graphics, so it really just depends on your perspective. You can hardly go after the graphics if they’re supposed to look like that in order to be a proper 8-bit homage.

Overall, if you’re a fan of Megaman, Doom-style play, or especially both, the game will definitely appeal to your sensibilities. Those who are looking for more complexity beyond a simple shooter will be disappointed, but it really is essentially what it says on the tin. If you want to shoot people with Megaman blasters and powerups, you will get that and then some.
